Kirikiri Inmates Jubilate as Customs Boss Commissions Ultra Modern ICT Building

The Inmates of Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre bust into applause and jubilation during the offical commissioning of a Four Classroom ICT educational block equipped with modern library by the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR PhD.

The project which was initiated by the former Customs Area Controller Joy Edeldouk of the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal Command, now Assistant Comptroller General of Customs. In her remarks, she said that her administration was challenged by the CGC Adeniyi sometime in August 2025 to initiate a remarkable project in the area that would be a legacy even though when they were long gone.

She recalled that the challenge spurred her to call members of her team and raise a collaboration platform with stakeholders who supported her dream with the necessary resources thus making the once-dreamed project a reality.

The CGC in the course of the his speech said that he was overwhelmed by the short drama organised by the inmates. According to him, “The drama has told the story the day without much ado.”

However, he congratulated the efforts of the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal Command officers for keying into the “Customs Care ” initiative which is meant to give hope to the needy in their time of serving at the correctional centers. He also promised to ensure that the facility which is fully air-conditioned with ICT equipment, e-library and academic books would be examined from time to time by the Nigeria Customs Corporate Social Responsibility scheme with a view of maintaining and upgrading the facility whenever the need arises.

The Comptroller General of Correctional Service Mr Sylvester Nwakuche who was represented by Dr Amos, Mni, Deputy Comptroller General of Correctional Service said that with the amazing hope renewal development in the correctional centres across the country, more inmates would turn out to be better citizens and well integrated into the society at the end of their serving terms.

It will be recalled that the CGC’s dream of helping the indigent and lowly members of the society come true with its Corporate Social Responsibility programme in areas such as education, health, vocational training, community welfare and many other human capacity development schemes across the country.
