Tincan Customs, NDLEA Seize ₦4.7bn Cannabis At Lagos Port

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tincan Island Port Command, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Department of State Services (DSS), has intercepted a massive consignment of cannabis valued at ₦4.7 billion at the Lagos port.
The seizure followed an intensive physical examination of a 40-foot container on January 28, 2026, which led to the discovery of 55 jumbo bags of Cannabis Indica and a firearm, Customs officials disclosed on Tuesday.
Addressing journalists, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, said the intercepted drugs comprised 2,366 compressed parcels with a combined weight of 1,183 kilograms. Also recovered during the operation was a Colt’s MK IV / Series 70 .45 automatic pistol with an empty magazine.
According to Onyeka, the illicit items were ingeniously concealed inside three used vehicles— a Hyundai Santa Fe, a Toyota Sienna, and a Toyota Matrix—imported through the port in an apparent attempt to evade detection.
“One suspect has been arrested in connection with the seizure, and investigations are ongoing to unravel the wider network behind the attempted smuggling,” the Comptroller said.
He commended the Comptroller-General of Customs for his leadership and unwavering support, noting that enhanced inter-agency collaboration has significantly improved operational effectiveness at the nation’s ports.
Onyeka added that the seized narcotics would be formally handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution, while the recovered firearm would be transferred to the appropriate security agency.
Reaffirming the Service’s stance, the NCS said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking and other transnational crimes, assuring the public of sustained vigilance and robust enforcement across all ports of entry.
